People ask what the "m" in mActivity stands for. The answer is the whole idea behind the gym: Mindful Activity. Not just moving your body, but being present while you do it — time that belongs to you, your training and the people around you, instead of your inbox and your feed.
Mindful Activity, from the start
mActivity was built on a simple belief: a workout is one of the few parts of the day that can be fully yours. When you're present for it — paying attention to the lift, the breath, the class, the person next to you — it does more for you. It's self-care in the truest sense: time set aside to invest in your own body and mind. That's the "m." It's why members simply call it the Mac, and it's why the floor feels different the moment you walk in.
Being present isn't just a nice idea; it changes how the work feels. In one study, adding a mindful, present-focused quality to a bout of exercise significantly lowered how hard it felt — the same physical effort, at the same heart rate, simply felt easier when attention was on the moment rather than elsewhere.1 Presence is a performance tool, not just a mood.
Where focus meets movement
Mindful strength training is the mind-body connection in practice: noticing your position, breath, range of motion and the muscles doing the work. Research shows that attentional cues can change muscle recruitment during a lift. Focusing on a particular muscle can increase its activation at lighter and moderate loads, while an external focus — such as driving the floor away or moving the weight toward a target — may be more helpful when the goal is maximum strength and efficient performance.6,7
The practical lesson is simple: do each repetition with intention. Use controlled, methodical movement, stay aware of your technique and choose the cue that fits the exercise. That does not mean every repetition must be extremely slow. It means you are training instead of moving on autopilot.
That level of concentration also gives the mind somewhere constructive to go. When your attention is on the next breath and the next repetition, everyday distractions, worries and stressors can move temporarily into the background. Exercise is not a replacement for mental-health care, but the broader evidence supports it as an important part of emotional well-being. A 2024 meta-analysis of 103 studies found that even a single bout of exercise was followed by improvements in mood and reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms, although the size of the benefit varied substantially among people and studies.8
Making room for new ideas
Clearing mental space can also support creativity, although the strongest evidence is specifically about walking rather than every kind of exercise. In four experiments, walking increased divergent thinking — the ability to generate multiple original ideas — during the walk and for a short time afterward.9 You may arrive focused on your workout and leave with a fresh approach to something that had been stuck. We should not promise that every session will produce a breakthrough, but movement can create conditions in which new ideas come more easily.
The case for a workout-length digital detox
Most of us never fully put the phone down. There's real value in a standing appointment that lets you. A 2025 randomized controlled trial found that simply reducing daily smartphone use for three weeks improved people's depressive symptoms, stress, well-being and sleep.2 You don't need to quit your phone — you just need a reliable stretch of the day without it. A workout is the perfect one.
The phone doesn't only cost you presence; it measurably costs you the workout. In a study on the training floor, texting and talking on the phone during exercise significantly lowered people's intensity — slower pace, lower heart rate — compared to training without it.3 Another found that using social media on a phone beforehand created enough mental fatigue to reduce how much people could lift.4 And texting while on your feet meaningfully degrades balance and stability5 — not what you want mid-set on a loaded movement.
One important exception: that same floor study found the opposite effect for music — listening to music through the phone actually raised exercise intensity and enjoyment.3 That's the distinction we draw. Earbuds in, music or a podcast on, phone in your pocket? Perfect. Phone in hand, scrolling or on a call? That's what pulls you — and everyone around you — out of it.
The culture we cultivate at the Mac
So here's how it works on our floor, and it's part of what makes the Mac feel like the Mac. We ask that the training floor stay phone-free for scrolling and calls. Put your earbuds in, cue up your music or a podcast, and train. Beyond that, the phone goes in your pocket.
There's a practical reason as much as a philosophical one. We've all seen it: someone sits down on a piece of equipment, the phone comes out, and a two-minute set becomes ten minutes of scrolling while others wait. A call gets taken mid-floor and suddenly everyone's workout has a soundtrack they didn't choose. It's not about being strict — it's about respect for the room. When the floor is present, it flows better for everyone: equipment turns over, energy stays up, and people actually connect.
And when you do need your phone — the lounge is right there
Life doesn't stop because you're at the gym, and we get that. That's exactly why the Mac has a co-working lounge. Need to answer an email, take a call, hop on a quick meeting or get some work done between sessions? The lounge is built for it — comfortable, WiFi-equipped, and separate from the floor. Handle what you need to handle there, then step back onto the floor and be fully in it.
